Open House is Tuesday, August 6, 2013 from 3 to 5.

Mrs. Reiselt is having a kindergarten orientation from 5 to 6.

School starts on Thursday, August 8, 2013.

We can't wait to meet the new Spunky Monkeys.

 

 

Walrus Cookies and Blubber

We have been learning all about walruses.  For our funky food, we made walrus cookie.

Our science experiment was all about how walruses keep warm in the arctic weather.  We had a bucket of ice and a blubber glove.  We observed how warm our hands were in the blubber glove and how cold our hand was in the ice.  We concluded that blubber keeps the walruses warm...for sure!

Winter Workstations

We started a new math routine.  Part of our routine is math workstations for 20 minutes.  Below is a few we recently finished.

Gingerbread Kid Cookies

We read all about different gingerbread men and a girl so we had to make our own.  At first I made one big gingerbread boy but the girls wanted a girl too.  So I started all over.

The Spunky Monkeys were amazed how I made the gingerbread boy
but not Xander.  He said, "She's good cause she's got skills!"

Gingerbread Man Shrinky Dinks

We made shrinky dink Gingerbread Men this week after we read different versions of the story.

Jan Brett's The Mitten

We read The Mitten by Jan Brett this week.  After reading it, we added the characters to our own white mitten.  We had to add them in order.  Next we added the action verb to each character. Later we added the other characters, Nicki and Baba to the mitten.  We also learned a song that puts the two together.  Then, our favorite part was singing and acting out the story.

 

The mole, rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badger, and fox are
already in the mitten.

Here comes the lumbering BEAR!

The mouse made the bear sneeze and they all fell out with an
AAaaah, AAaaah, AAaaah...chooo!

Mrs. Hood, the Happy Hound teacher, found the song.    If I remember right, it goes something like this (to the tune The Farmer and the Dell).

Reindeer Learning

We learned about reindeer this week.  Our poem for the week was Five Little Renideer.  After we read the poem several times.  The line, OOooo went the wind and out went the lights, didn't make sense.  We thought the lights should go ON at Christmas time since Christmas lights are pretty at night.  So, with a sticky note, we changed it.  Now we could act it out but first we had to get ourselves in order.  Each hat had an ordinal number on it.

We also learned information about reindeer.  We did some of our own informational writing by labeling our reindeer.  After we wrote our labels, we went out in the hall and added our reindeer and labels to butcher paper on the walls.
