Christopher Columbus Day Fun

This week (I know 2 days), we learned about Christopher Columbus. Above, we made Christopher Columbus cookies. See the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria sailing toward land?

Miguel, Meryck, Aubrey, Isabella, and Bradley

Arianah (leaning back), Daelin, Henry, K.J., and Adan

Daelin did a great job making her cookie.

Mitchell licking his stick. YUM

Jonathan was watching me take a picture of Cooper, so I turned it quick and snapped his picture. Not bad for not focusing or anything.

Desiray, Cooper, Bella, Jonathan, and Luc

Cooper with his cookie.

We ran out of time to eat our cookies before lunch, so we just brought our lunches back to the room so we could eat both.

School pizza....mmmm!

We thanked Josie for bringing all the ingredients for the Christopher Columbus Cookies.

We always enjoy eating in the room.

During math, we made a Christopher Columbus TLC Art project. I know these look cute but they have a lot of academic vocabulary with it. Can you believe the Spunky Monkeys know the terms vertical and horizontal? We know that because of these TLC Art projects.

We learn how to make different shapes by starting with one basic shape. An example is our ships' flags. We started with rectangles. But we know how to make 2 triangles from a rectangle. We cut in a diagonal line from corner to corner and tada, we made 2 triangles.

Mucky Milkshakes

We made Mucky Milkshakes for our Funky Food Activity.
We planned on doing it in the room but the ice cream was too hard so we went outside and did it during recess. A little sun makes everything better and softer.

We added a large scoop of ice cream to a Ziploc bag. Then added a little bit of milk.

Then, we had to squeeze it all together.

Add a straw and seal it back up, and tada...mucky milkshakes!

We had so much fun making this funky food.

But drinking them was even more fun and yummy! (Christy)

Oh so good! (Arianah)

Jonathan loved eating his mucky milkshake.

Look at those happy Spunky Monkeys!

Vayla wanted me to take her picture drinking her milkshake. Too cute.

Henry drank it until there was nothing left but air.

Dustin is finishing making his Mucky Milkshake while Miguel and Adan are enjoying theirs.

Aaah...finally getting to enjoy my milkshake.

Miguel didn't miss a drop.

Henry ran up to me and said for me to look at his tongue. I asked what was it? He said, "It is cold. See!" I love this picture.

The Invisible Fire Extinguisher Science Experiement

This is probably one of my favorite science experiments.
Of course I say that about most of the experiments.

First we look into 2 containers. Nothing but air, an invisible gas. We placed a burning candle into each container and nothing happened. The fire stayed lit.

Next, I add some vinegar and baking soda to one of the containers. Waited for the bubbles to settle. We then predict what would happen to the fire when I placed into that container.

It was awesome! The fire went out! So, then I poured the invisible gas into the other container. We tried it again. Guess what? It went out too.

We talked all about the invisible air being carbon dioxide and fire needing oxygen to glow. If you would like to try this experiment at home, check out this link:

Fire Safety Week

We have been learning all about Fire Safety this week.
On Thursday, the Banks County Fire Department came and visited.

We learned about fire trucks and what they do.

And we listened to firefighters tell us about smoke detectors, stay low and go, how to call if there is a fire, and the importance of having a plan in case of fires.

Adan was chosen to help demonstrate how to:

STOP!

DROP!

And ROLL!

These are all important steps to know if you were on fire.

We also got to see a firefighter in all his gear. We heard the strange noise the air tank makes too.

The firefighters told us that they are our friends. We should not hide or be scared of them.

Homecoming Pep Rally

As if Farm Day wasn't enough craziness...we also had the Homecoming Pep Rally too. The Spunky Monkeys LOVED it!

Here are the Spunky Monkeys waiting for it to start.

The cheerleaders did a dance and came to the stands to sit with us while the football players talked. Carmen came and sat with us. She was in Mrs. Martin's class when she was in kindergarten. Man, Mrs. Martin is getting old.

Carmen took Bella down on the field to play some silly games and dance in front of the whole school.

Another cheerleader grabbed Vayla to go onto the field too.

We loved listening to the music and cheering for the Leopards.

Farm Day Funky Food and Science Experiment

To go along with farm day, we had a cool science experiment. We had to figure out how to get a hard boiled egg (chicken, farm day) into an old-timey milk jug (cow, farm day). Now the hard part is, we could not harm the egg. We came up with lots of ways but they all would have broken our egg.

Luckily, Mrs. Martin had the perfect way. She put a burning piece of paper into the milk jug. And walla...the egg went right into the milk jug! It was so awesome.

Then we made Pretty Pink Pigs! Thanks to Cooper's family for providing the ingredients.

Miguel is showing one of our favorite parts of Funky Food. Licking the icing off the sticks!

Bradley's Pretty Pink Pig.

Luc's Pretty Pink Pig.

Bella and Jonathan's Pretty Pink Pigs.

Christy was excited to show me her Pretty Pink Pig.
