Gutsy the Fox

Gutsy the Flying Fox comes and visits us each year.  He is totally cool.  He always has a serious message along with a lot of fun.  This year he focused on Slam Dunk Bullying.  Each letter in his name had a special message.
                                                              G-Give Respect
                                                              U-Understand and Encourage
                                                              T-Team Up
                                                              S-Slam Dunk Bullying
                                                              Y-You Choose

We love Gutsy the Flying Fox!

As we come into the gym, they are playing music and playing games.

Gutsy does silly stuff with us.

Gutsy even has the teachers come up.
This year, he grabbed Mrs. Martin

She had to copy his dance moves.

He made her shake her booty.
Mrs. Martin LOVED it!

With all the fun, there is a serious message.
This year Connie and Gutsy talked about bullies.

Then Gutsy showed us his moves.

Flying through the air.

And over people's head.  Mr. West looks nervous!

Classbook-"I Like To Play"

We make a classbook each week with our new sight words in it. This week our words were: play, to, and. So, our sentence is about playing with our friends. To make their page, the Spunky Monkeys dictate a sentence to the teachers on Monday and copy it into their Learning Log. We practice the sentences each day during reading groups. On Fridays, they get their sentence and have to cut it apart, put it on paper in the correct order, glue, and illustrate.
This week, they just added the picture.  These pictures were too cute not to share.
The picture and sentence belong to each person in the middle of the picture.

Purple Volcanoes

Our color this week was purple, so what better than making purple volcanoes for our science experiment!
We started out with a vase half full of 100% grape juice.
Add vinegar.

Then a little baking soda.  Wow!  It started to come out.

We continued adding vinegar and baking powder and watched what happened.

Then we talked about why this happens.
baking soda + vinegar = chemical reaction
(grape juice made it purple)
Now it is the Spunky Monkeys turn.

BCES Reader's Theater

We were lucky to have a fourth grade class come down and put on three different Reader's Theater stories for us.  They have been practicing in class and even dressed up to add to their character.  Several of the kids used to be Spunky Monkeys (Danielle, Braxton, and Bianca).  We were glad to see our former Spunky Monkeys all grown up and reading so well!
Mrs. West getting the kids ready to share the first story.
This story is The Three Little Elephants.
This story is Spiderella.  It is another version of the traditional Cinderella.

This story is my favorite!
Bubba, the Cowboy Prince.
It is another version of Cinderella but Bubba is "Cinderella" in it.

Braxton was a Spunky Monkey.
